Exceptional sound and features

This was a Christmas present, and probably one of the best I've had. It's fantastic to be able to listen to DAB, but now I can also play my MP3 music collection which is stored on my PC, and I can listen to a multitude of Internet radio stations. The sound is just top notch, unbelievably crystal clear and vibrant. Two minor quibbles though. I use it as a bedside device, but bizarrely, when the Radio is turned on, there is no way of displaying the time in large digits - although this is possible when on Standby. This is a big bugbear, so I hope it's addressed in a firmware revision. Also, the display is too bright during the night, even though the Brightness is supposedly Off. Can this be reduced?

Woeful

I assume it is losing network connection [even though it has keep network connection selected and shows network icon] as it is pot lock whether the unit appears on your network to stream to from a PC. I assume it is the same problem causing it to be a lottery whether the UNDOK remote control app can find the unit. Not used internet radio much so can't comment on whether it drops connection when listening - worth trying before you buy if possible. Buyer beware if you want to use UPnP or the smartphone remote app [which is useful]. Sound quality is good although there is noticeable excessive sibilance on spoken word programs, but you are paying for features that don't work, so can't recommend.

Internet Radio question

Can you add an internet radio station manually to Roberts radio 94i?

Lovely radio aside from

Alongside the Pure Avanti Flow wi-fi radio i still own, this is up there as another solid set. Whilst the sound is superb it doesn't quite match up to the 'volume' and acoustics of the Pure set, but does surpass all other units i have owned. If i have one gripe, and hence only 4 star rating, it is that you cannot bluetooth on the output side, i.e. to set of wireless headphones. Bit of a shame when you can bluetooth music into the set. The other downside (and only my opinion) is that the 3.5mm line out Jack is on the back of the set....a pain in the backside when it comes to plugging headphones in since the lead trails round the front to place headphones on your head! I would also have made the base of the radio heavier so that when you press the 'select' button with one finger the radio itself doesn't move. Sadly you need to hold the radio when pressing the select button. That said i cannot fault the tone of the radio or the amount of presets that can store your favourites. I love the design, the traditional feel and look (wood case and leather type strap) and have to say i prefer the ease of use over my Pure unit even though the sound is not quite as good as the Avanti flow. I do agree with others who comment on the connectivity side of things in that on several occasions it tells me there is no network when that is certainly not the case. Shutting down to almost re-boot / connect is not good. 4 stars is a fair grade for me based on my Avanti Flow gaining 4.5 stars.

Excellent Radio

My wife and I already had 2 of the Stream 83i Roberts Radios (the predecessor of this one) so had little hesitation in buying the 94i when we required a third. It is well built, easily does everything it should and has a superb sound for its size. Set-up is straightforward. Not the cheapest, but highly recommended if you want great quality.

I wish it was perfect...

So nearly perfect. Great features, sounds great, plays and hooks up to everything you need - radio, DAB, internet read up, AUX, Bluetooth etc. My issue is that the internet radio doesn’t always play and says there is no ‘connection’ even though the WiFi is strong and stable. It’s very annoying when you want to listen to your favourite station. The other main issue is that the remote eats battery’s. I put a brand new good quality branded battery in and it lasts 1 week at best before it dies. There must be a problem there!? But it is a great radio and I love listening to music through it.

Quality sound but...

I purchased this radio several days ago. It produces a high quality sound, but I have found it to problematic and frustrating when using internet radio via a wireless connection. Having set it up I find UNDOK works fine. The issue I have shows itself when attempting to wake the radio on the network via UNDOK. Pinging its IP address from a PC also shows that it not detectable on the network as it comes back with the message: ‘request timed out’. I have connected the radio to my network both via WPS, and then through inputting the SID and other settings manually, yet still the same result. Sometimes it will wake and other occasions it will not. In terms of troubleshooting I have also tested the wireless signal strength where the radio is currently located via an app. This reported the signal level to be relatively high (approx. 73-82%), something I knew already as other devices work fine via my wireless signal. At the same time I checked the wireless status for the radio itself by imputing its IP address into a web browser. Interestingly it reported the wireless signal for the radio as being very low, fluctuating between 2-19%, while the app reported 73-82%! Clearly to my mind there is an issue around this radios ability to pick up, and maintain a wireless signal once it is asleep on the network. The only way to wake it consistently is via the remote control, or the on button. Disappointingly I could not recommend this radio other than for its DAB function and bluetooth at this point.

Good sound, but a couple of flaws......one fatal

All I wanted from a 'radio' and sounded good, but tried 2 different sets from different shops and both had same fault [some might say that that was too much of a coincidence and it is a design fault, but I can't possibly comment]. The auto standby mode kicked in and shut the unit down when streaming Bluetooth. This happened when streaming from 2 different laptops [W10]. It worked OK streaming from my phone and iPad. Contacted Roberts tech support, but was just told it was a fault and to send them both back. The UNDOK feature/app was a bit hit and miss about when it wanted to work as well, which was frustrating, as it was good when it decided it was up for it. Also, asked Roberts about their other products as an alternative, but they decided they couldn't be bothered to answer. Hey ho!!

another great radio from Roberts

Bought this via online shopping, arrived today....real style...looks stunning....sounds just like 93i....but has subtle changes that are not obvious until hook up and loading....the first issue, which for me is a crucial one . Roberts have changed the colour on the screen, to scroll down/up the highlight is a pale blue which does not stand out very well ( the 93i is yellow on black, an ideal colour for partially sighted people.....)..the main menu no longer names the music source I e internet spotify fm dab....you need to know the symbols ..but for me the main issue is,I can't deal with the pale blue visually.....pity ....THIS IS A BRILL RADIO, I would say...BUY.......the sound is exceptional !! by the way...I do have the 93i....it is GREAT all rounder for me...………...can Roberts issue a software update to change colours on the 94i, I wonder....too much to hope for....?? but I say again....BUY this 94i radio !!! you will love the sound ! Faulty on purchase?

Bought Stream 94i yesterday from local John Lewis. At £230* it's expensive but on paper it has all the features I wanted and I hoped for a robust radio with good sound quality and performance. (*It's a portable - compact size with a handle - but to use it as such you need the 'optional' rechargeable battery pack that takes it up to this price! … and it just screws onto the back covering much of the sub-woofer. I knew that before purchase so it's appearance/location lives up to my low expectation in that regard). I have just fired it up and I'm immediately disappointed. I may well take it back (what a pain) but it is 1. underperforming in one respect and 2. probably faulty in another respect. As for no. 2 (faulty), it won't pair with anything on Bluetooth .. in fact doesn't recognise any products (e.g. my Android phone or PC. My phone pairs effortlessly with other things (audio systems, my car, etc). My phone discovered it and says that it is connected to Stream 94i but in the Roberts radio the blue Bluetooth symbol just keeps flashing which, as I understand it, denotes searching for Bluetooth signals. It does not list any products found. As far as I can see I'm doing all the right things to set it up. I will try and try again but if no luck, back it'll have to go (for a refund, not a replacement). And problem 1.: Whilst OK on DAB it is hopeless in FM. Must be very insensitive. Even on the 'find weak stations' setting it doesn't find much and all are noisy due to weakness of signal capture. On the stronger signals only setting it only found one station and that was noisy. I have a number or FM radios/receivers from 'cheapo' £20 small portable to micro and full size hifi. All fine and clear on nearer stations inc all BBC national stations - 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.. I do have a simple Roberts Solar DAB portable and bedside clock radio working with their telescopic aerials. Both fine (and a lot cheaper). This model ….

Beautifully designed and sounds fantastic!

This radio is packed with features and sounds wonderful for its size. Set up was very easy-instructions provided were clear. The sound is excellent and easily fills a room. Internet radio works well and DAB also sounds great with a strong signal and no drop outs experienced yet. The Undok app allows you to turn radio on and control DAB Spotify and internet radio from smartphone as well as setting sleep timer and volume control etc I am very pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend.

Very dissapointed with value for money

I have just purchased the Robert's Radio Stream 94i from John Lewis. This is my first time owning a Robert's radio and I thought I would get a premium radio that suited my needs. I must admit there are some build issues that are quite unexpected baring in mind the product is not far short of £200. The "selection" jog wheel is a big issue. It has indents in and as you turn the wheel to select an input, a station name, a track or anything that the wheel is designed to be used for, it "skips" items that are not "on dent". You then find yourself trying to find a spot inbetween the indents to select the item that has been "skipped". Trying to press select on it once you have highlighted it is then a little like the krypton factor! For a premium design, the long row of buttons along the top of the speaker are not aligned correctly. Of course it is not obvious to all, but again for a premium product such as this, I would expect a certain amount of time and care to be taken over details. The "my Music" feature I have been looking forward to. I have a large collection of regular FLAC audio files (44.1/16 bit) as well as "high resolution" FLAC files in varying sample rates and in varying bit depths on my music server. The first issue is that the 94i does not "see" files above 44.1 at 16bit, this is a huge dissapointment. Secondly, the files it does see, there is no "search" facilty. This is crazy! I have artists from a through z and albums of the same. Scroling through with the annoying selector wheel takes forever and after a while of "turning" you feel like you might break it as it all has a "cheap" feel to it. The supplied remote control is a little bonus, however, the buttons are very very stiff. So I end up resorting to the controls on the unit itself for ease and convenience. Then there is the "Undock" app. This is great, but not without downfalls too. For instance, you cannot set alarms and seraching internet staions are tricky. It would appear "going back" in the folder tree once you have found a country or genre has been forgotten about. I find I have to make numerous random button presses and restarts of the app to get back to the root/starting folder. I am sure Roberts' will deny "Undock" being their property and so I should contact "Undock", however I am telling you perspective buyers directly. The alarm features require attention too. The "fade in time", users should have a facilty to adjust the fade in speed or to disable it if they wish. Another huge dissapointment is not being able to have something from "my Music" on the media server be used for my alarm, be it a playlist, a track or an album. Personally I am not a fan of "morning radio" and sometimes I have to be up before some have gone to bed and the selections at that time are not what I wish to be woken by. However, waking to my favorite album, song or playlist from my media server would be the ideal option, but Roberts have chosen not to allow a user this choice. I feel that Roberts need to provide a firmware update to resolve a lot of these issues. Yes, the build issues I will have to live with but the other things can be resolved by a firmware update. Selector wheel - Sensitivity adjustment Alarm - Fade in time & Diasble fade in feature. Add feature to use your own media as an alarm (album, song or playlist) My Music - Flac - Update to enable playback of High Resolution audio fies up 196k/24 bit If Roberts have any control or contact with Undock, provision of alarm settings are required. The over all sound of the unit is acceptable. The abilty to adjust the EQ to your own room and tastes is a huge plus and once the issues within the onboard firmware/software are resolved, I would then feel like I am closer to a £200 piece of equipment. As it stands, I am feeling very let down by a brand that has a very reputable name.
